In 1937, the Maine State Legislature  passed an act designating the road from Portland to Fort Kent as the Pine Tree Trail. This was done thanks to the hard work of a legislator from Milford, George E. Martin, who had a vision of showcasing all of Maine from the coast to the crown. After World War II and new road planning, the Trail faded away until the current age.

In the early 2010's, an old, rusty embossed Pine Tree Trail sign was unearthed on a family farm in Molunkus. The sign was stored for years until in 2019, research began on its origin and meaning. After years of discovery, the history was learned and a new effort began to revitalize the Pine Tree Trail and erect new signs.

A fundraising drive began, and thanks to 15+ businesses and individuals, the Maine Department of Transportation signs were fabricated. They were then installed thanks to the Maine Office of Tourism. Although there are 130+ signs currently up, this is no where near the original 500 that were placed in the 1930's.

The Friends of the Pine Tree Trail is a newly formed 501(c)3. We seek to add more signs so the route is easily navigable, as well as ensure the Trail is always signed and doesn't fade away again.

It is also the goal of the Friends of the Pine Tree Trail to showcase all the towns and cities on the route, bringing attention to the communities on its route...as well as all the attractions and events it has to offer to adventurous travelers.
